Making a Difference

Did you know that the warmth of your smile can calm a nervous donor? Casual conversation can give someone the confidence to donate blood. And your caring attitude can encourage a first-time donor to continue donating. It is probably something you have never thought of. But it is the little things that you will do as a Canadian Blood Services volunteer that will contribute to saving lives. The time you donate as an ambassador of Canada’s blood system will do more than ensure that blood donation remains a strong commitment in your community. When you make the donation experience one that donors wish to repeat, you allow young couples to become parents, children to continue dreaming and people in need to enjoy everything your community has to offer. As a volunteer, you will not only play a critical role in our blood system; you will be key to the strength and vitality of your community.

Volunteers have a hand in saving lives

Volunteer Leader
Our volunteer leaders use their leadership skills to help coordinate and host blood donor clinics in their community, workplace or by providing leadership in our permanent clinics. In this role, volunteers set-up mobile clinics in partnership with staff; recruit, train and schedule volunteers as well as promote upcoming clinics in their community. If you are interested in contributing and developing leadership skills, are connected in your community and would like to be involved in something a few times a year, this may be the opportunity for you.
In-Community Role
This opportunity involves participating in community events (WYT?, community fairs, speaking opportunities) with a focus on recruiting new donors and promoting upcoming clinics and is flexible in terms of scheduling. This is a great opportunity to volunteer with groups of people in local communities as well as raise awareness about the importance of donating blood. This is also a great role for individuals who may want to volunteer a few times per year with a varying schedule as well as those who are interested in meeting people in their community.
In-Clinic Role
This opportunity occurs in blood donor clinics where volunteers are responsible for creating a welcoming and comfortable experience for blood donors. This is typically a re-occurring role (ie –a few shifts per month) and takes place in either our mobile or permanent clinics. This role focuses on interaction with donors and staff with the main priorities to provide a positive experience for donors during their donation process.
